Delicious and Healthy Nice Cream Recipe

3 Ingredient Summer “Nice Cream” Recipe This has been our summer go to dessert and it’s super easy and affordable to make. We have been taking advantage of berry season here in Michigan both at the local farmers market and our own back yard. Since this recipe calls for frozen berries, I simply place the freshly picked berries on parchment paper (on a baking tray) in the freezer until completely frozen. Now I want to share why we decided to switch to “nice cream.” The Switch from Dairy to Nice Cream When we eat dairy, we strive for organic, grass fed and local. Organic and grass fed are important because it means that the cows are able to eat exactly what nature intended them to eat, the things that grow from the earth. To ruminate in the fields and to enjoy a variety of delicious and nutritious “grasses.” Since dairy is a product that comes from another animal, it’s important to think about the lifestyle that the animal has. Is it being pumped with hormones? …

Backyard Foraging

It’s time to do a little Backyard Foraging It’s spring in Michigan and things are starting to feel a little bit greener, lighter and…tasty 😋 I love foraging and have been learning about “edible weeds” for the past 3 years or so. I am an herbalist in training and really love learning about the medicinal properties of food and the things that we ingest. I was so lucky to find 4 morels in our back yard, in addition to some dandelion greens, violet flowers and leaves and some wild and cultivated chives. Humans have been eating from the land for a long time We can all play part in that ancestral tradition by learning what grows in our area. There are many incredible guidebooks and lots of useful online information about foraging. Plants can be used as food (you can ingest them as you would food) or they can be medicinal (you should be working with these plants in a medicinal way and knowing for certain how much etc.) We use herbs as “medicine” in …

Choosing to be Healthy

The pillars of health are something that we can influence Choosing to be healthy: We can make conscious decisions to affect our health and over all wellbeing. And we have the right to take our health into our own hands, and yes regardless of our genetics, what you have done in the past, and what you have been brought up to believe. Just because our parents become sick from this that and the other thing or, “oh this runs in my family…” It doesn’t mean it’s your fate, neuroplasticity is tellings us that when we change our environment, aka the things we do with our time, our surroundings, the food we eat, and everything that we have control over, we can change the expression of our genes. AMAZING! I have been on a health journey for the past 5 years + and it’s been such a beautiful experience. Knowing that I am in control of my health Health is created on the foundation of many things…the sum of all parts of ourselves and we can …

Inspiration from the Trail, Why Moving Matters

I just wanted to share a story quickly about an experience from last fall. My husband and I were hiking through the smoky mountain national park and really excited about our journey, the leaves were just starting to change and the crisp fall air was coming in and everything was just looking so beautiful. We started hiking early in the day and ended up passing a man along the way from the opposite direction. We all stopped and just kind of exchanged information about how we felt in that moment. We were all feeling so high and so happy, just being immersed in nature. It was a beautiful fall day with the sun shining through the canopy of color leaves. This other man was feeling this way as well so it was a really beautiful connection. He was beaming with light. He started sharing a little bit about his life and how he was just wrapping up a 8 mile hike. No big deal. My husband and I were really supporting, he was about …

Nourish bowls as my go to meal for health + a little herb love

Nourish bowls…Buddha bowls 🥣…super amazing  bowls filled with nutritious and health filled goodies, with a rainbow of colors, tastes and more ☀️   Your body really is a temple and what we eat matters   I love making nourish bowls, these because they’re easy and help me meal prep. I typically cook a big batch of everything and then put into smaller pyrex containers for the first 3 days of the week. That way I only have a few finishing touches to make sure the meal is aligned with what I my body needs that day.      They’re as simple as… 🍚 base of grains/ seeds, I use organic quinoa like 95% of the time, it’s easy, my body likes it and it tastes great. I usually eat 1/3-1/2 cup. You can bulk prep this on Sunday or Monday to make your life even sweeter.   🥬 greens and beans, I like to cook a batch of beans (kidney, black, black eyed peas, chickpeas, I call this my “bean of the week” with onion and …

Why does yoga (+movement) make you feel so damn good?

☀️ I love your energy ☀️ It’s a beautiful act of love to move our bodies, to open into the heart space, to allow time for self inquiry and connecting to the beautiful vessel that moves us in this reality.   I always knew that yoga felt good but I didn’t always understand the why. I knew that I felt good after I ran and after doing some strength training. I knew that there was a release of feel good chemicals in the brain after working out. 🏋️‍♀️ I knew I was telling my body, “I am strong” just by the mere actions of moving the body in space, performing the basic and necessary foundational motions such as hip hinging, squatting, arm extension and flexion, pushing, pulling, etc. We are evolutionarily wired to move. To travel through our limbs, to forage, to squat, to be able to get up off the ground without assistance. Our bodies are so capable. The thing that stops them is prolonged sitting, hunching over computers and phones and living sedentary …
