Our Favorite Hiking 🥾 Snacks

Hello Healthy hiking snacks 👋 When you are on the trail you should always bring some tasty snacks to help sustain your body. Your body needs fuel and wants to be fed…clean. Clean ingredients so it can thrive and carry you on the trail.   I always have my day pack ready with a protein bar just in case I do an impromptu hike but I typically like to plan my snacks ahead, especially for longer hikes. These are a few of our favorite things 💧 🌺 Chia Gel Drink This one is great…hydrating and full of Omega 3s, which are so nourishing and anti-inflammatory. Chia is a great way to balance our Omega 3 to Omega 6 ratio. It’s ideal to strive for a 1:1 ratio of 3’s:6’s, but our modern diet is all about those Omega 6’s. But then Mama chia came along to save the day. This amazingly refreshing drink is great for hikes and long days in the sun.  I use an old GT’s kombucha bottle for this. You will need… …

Ways you can connect with Nature

How can we connect deeper with the Nature? There are so many ways we can connect with the Earth. Something I have been reflecting on a lot after our Smokey Mountains National Park road trip. Connecting with nature feels so good. It rejuvenates us and fills us with a remembering of our own inner light. I always knew being in nature felt good and I know there is so much scientific evidence to support that, buy my heart tells me…of course it feels good. Some ways we can connect to the Earth 🌏 ✅ Go for a sunrise / sunset 🌅 walk There is a lot of research that suggests that sunsets and sunrises help attune our hormones to our natural mammalian rhythms. We have been evolving for a very long time to see the colors of the sky in the morning and night. Getting fresh air is so good for you and really keeps your being in check. The sun’s light signals when it’s time to wake and when it’s time to sleep. A …

Hiking in my Xero Z-Trail Ev Sandals

Why I love hiking in my Xero’s Comfort 💜 They are super comfortable, each strap fits very gently and comfortably on the foot. Even after a long day of hiking and my feet are feeling tired, I look forward to putting them on again in the morning. They allow my feet to breath and take in all the good nutrients that the earth provides for us. Toe Splay 🦶 The toes are allowed to spread as nature intended. Think about how cramped your feet get when you wear regular tennis shoes, joggers, etc. Our feet are meant to splay and to engage in the environment.   Thin Soles 🌎 The soles are thin and allow you to receive biofeedback from your environment. When we wear thick padded shoes we are getting a “false” sense of what’s really there. These shoes really help me understand my environment and I firmly believe they have contributed to my over all foot strength and mobility of my ankle. The foot is so so complicated and beautiful. It literally holds …

A Spring 2022 Smoky Mountain Road Trip

My husband and I are currently on our annual Easter road trip to the Smoky Mountains. It’s such a beautiful time to visit because all of the spring ephemerals are just starting to shine life and light into the beautiful mountain terrain. We’ve seen so many beautiful flowers. It feels like such an honor to hike into these mountains and to take the time to notice the moment. To rest in the lushness of the mountainside. To hear the sound of endless rivers and streams, and seeing columbines bloom from the sides of cliffs from the road. I feel so blessed to be here. We went on a hike called Chestnut Trail and saw so many beautiful flowers as we began the trek up the incline welcoming us on the path. The Smoky Mountain national Park is one of the most bio diverse areas in North America. It has so much to offer and it’s really a safe space for your soul to rest. Coming into nature is always so restful for me and I …

enjoy winter with ease

Some practical tips for enjoying winter 1. Dress the part When you engage in nature you will often find yourself rewarded by her beauty. Whether it be a sunrise, sunset, spotting a hawk, owl, or eagle. Nature is always blessing us with gifts. We feel whole when we are in nature, we feel happy and we feel the sense of connection. Do your sweet self a favor and find yourself in the cold slumber of winter. And of course the basics… Warm coatHatScarf or wool neck gaiterGloves Sunglasses Dress in layers, you build warmth through the air between layers, pretty cool, right 😀 I like to wear a pair of leggings or my smart wool base layer. Followed by my lined Carhart pants (I have had these for many years and they are really serving their purpose) Work with what you have and make note of what works and what doesn’t. I’ll wear a wool underlayer (synthetic or wool are best if you plan to be active in the winter) On top of my wool …

connecting to the spirit of winter

Leaning into winter   It has been a process and it’s not always comfortable, but wow is it a beautiful way to pass the time as the sun sets early and we find ourselves spending much more time indoors. Being in the cold makes you feel alive. The cool air permeating your earth suit. You are immediately taken into awareness. You feel the cold in so many different ways and they’re all lovely, making you appreciate your home and it’s levels of “comfort” even more. As an avid nature love, I had always waited in anticipation for the spring…leading into summer and the fall. Three seasons I have always easily loved. Winter has it’s own sense of wonder. As a native Michigander, winter has been part of my life since my first year of life on this wondrous planet. I was born in the spring so I always said spring was my favorite season, the season I was born into, just after the start of spring on March 22.   Bursting with life, just …
